What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy with guitar and hands feeling the vibration of the instrument

Music therapy is a scientific field whose effects have been demonstrated in various studies carried out by researchers from different disciplines.

The earliest known reference dates back to around 3000 BC and describes a gynaecologist who used music to increase fertility in women and to support pregnancies in order to prevent miscarriages.

Music therapy is the use of sound and musical elements to support neurological, psychological, physical and social development within a process aimed at helping people achieve their goals related to rehabilitation, treatment or prevention, in both individual and group settings.

When sound- and music-based practices are applied correctly, they can stimulate and modulate neurological, endocrine, psychological, immunological and physiological systems.

Integrated Tactile Music Therapy

Developed by me, Ednaldo Dos Santos, during my doctoral studies, Integrated Tactile Music Therapy is an innovative method for the prevention of psychosomatic disorders.

This approach is ideal for people who, for various reasons, cannot commit to a continuous therapeutic process, but who in acute situations – such as exam periods or weeks of intense work – need immediate therapeutic support to quickly relieve or resolve the problem.

In my work, I combine music therapy and multisensory interventions in a single session to promote deep relaxation, stress reduction and emotional as well as physical balance.

This is achieved through the integrated use of music and targeted therapeutic techniques.

The method consists of applying receptive music therapy techniques – using music pieces selected by the music therapist to achieve specific therapeutic goals – together with different forms of tactile stimulation.

These combined methods help to relieve pain, reduce stress, improve circulation and support overall well-being.
